Officially known as Maragondanahalli-Gollahalli lake, it is situated in midst of Electronic City Phase 1, Bangalore. Initial Stages of lake is seen to have a lot of Duck weed, crocodile weed, algae and fungus. Approach to the lake was blocked by thick bushes as deep as 4 feet from the main road
Lake bed was used as a open bar by some people which eventually triggered some quarrels.
That’s when a group of individuals started to pursue the project . What started as a weekend project, the team started cutting the bushes towards the road, using bush cutter, created their own tools to pull the weed out of lake. In a span of few months, the lake became visible and people started to notice the change
Soon, Volunteers from community started joining. Kids were the first to join and then every weekend the residents from neighboring communities started lending a hand. In a span of 7 months the entire lake transformed into a community activity park Cleaned, mud filled, trees planted
Today, the lake is approachable, clean and boundaries marked
A Trust in the name of “Guardians of Lakes environmental Trust” was established to maintain the lake. Community comes together on Weekends for drives like painting on the tree trunks & foot path & Plastic cleaning organized by the trust amongst other activities. Regular events like Earth day and environmental day are celebrated by the community. Today the community is taking care of the lake with active participation from residents nearby and is looking forward to taking up more lake rejuvenation and environmental projects.
A Lake for the community and community for a Lake!
While that was the story behind our start, we want to continue the journey and complete more projects. We are looking forward to your support.
